Matthew McConaugheys Serenity Character Was Inspired By A Very Strange Individual

Matthew McConaughey plays a complicated individual in the new film Serenity. He lives in one of the most beautiful places on Earth, dedicating his life to his real passion, but hes also an intensely emotional person with some rage-fueled instincts. Needless to say, Baker Dill is a peculiar creation from the mind of writer/director Steven Knight but what makes the character even more interesting is that hes apparently inspired by a real person, as the filmmaker recently told me:

A few years ago I went on a fishing boat with a tuna boat captain, and he took tourists out fishing and he was very nice and accommodating until a fish bit - and then he was completely obsessed with the fish. You didn't exist. He just went for it. And it just interested me somebody that lived on this beautiful island, their only concern was the fish, and I just was interested in how a character could be like that. So I began to construct a character who might have reason for that.

Earlier this month I had the pleasure of hopping on the phone with Steven Knight to talk about his work on Serenity, and it was at the very start of our conversation that we got into his inspiration for making the film. It apparently all started with a vacation and a fishing expedition, led by a genial man prone to extreme intensity.

Knowing this, the actions of this inspirational figure are very clear from the very beginning of Serenity. The movie opens with a genial Baker Dill out on the ocean with a couple of clients whose line gets snagged by a gigantic tuna one that the captain has been hunting for years. While the tourists have paid Dill to let them catch fish after being led to the proper spots in the water, that doesnt stop our protagonist from taking extreme control of the situation, going as far as to threaten one of the men with a knife, should he try to get between him and his catch. Needless to say, you immediately get a very clear picture of who this man is, and its because Steven Knight knew exactly the kind of character he wanted at the center of his story.

Armed with a very clear image of his lead, what came next was crafting an appropriate narrative for him to chart, and within that the writer/director took it upon himself to make the creative process as complicated as he could in pursuit of a greater challenge. The movie is Knights directorial follow-up to 2013s Locke a film set in real time entirely within the confines of a car being driven by Tom Hardy so one can see this pattern emerging in his work. He explained,

I like to set myself narrative challenges, if you like, so I wanted to try and construct a story that was quite a conventional, noir-ish love story of sorts, and at a very inconvenient point in the conventional film take away the reality of it. And also offer the lead character the possibility of knowing what was happening through the fourth wall. So I wanted to see if I could do that, and if I could engage in audience with the characters, and then take away that engagement, and then restore it. So it was an intellectual challenge.

To go any further into the complexity of that approach would be diving way too far into spoilers and Serenitys hook is definitely one that deserves to be experienced within the film. Will John Krasinski Be Involved In A Quiet Place 2? Heres What The Producer Says

A Quiet Place is unquestionably one of the best horror movies of the year so far and a huge box office success to boot. So it should come as no surprise that whether you want it or not, a sequel film is moving forward at Paramount. Given what a huge influence director John Krasinski had on the final film, the big question mark for A Quiet Place 2 is whether or not the increasingly in-demand actor and director will still be involved. Producer Andrew Form has provided a promising answer to this question, confirming that John Krasinski will still be involved in A Quiet Place 2, as he explained:

Oh [Krasinski is] definitely involved. We're lucky on this one. I've had movies where the studio says to you, 'Here's your date. Let's go!' and on this one we're not rushing anything, which is amazing. So we're gonna take our time, we're gonna figure out where to go, but there is no rush on it and we're just starting to talk about it. We're figuring out what everyone's involvement's gonna be and what the actual next movie's gonna be. The first one is so special to us that we really want to take our time with this and not rush anything.

This is encouraging to hear, and the prospect of A Quiet Place 2 is significantly more exciting knowing that John Krasinski will still be involved. Andrew Form did not however reveal to Collider exactly how John Krasinski will be involved, whether it be as director, writer or as a hands-on kind of producer. Although I imagine that may be something that hasn't even been decided yet. The nice thing, and something rather surprising, is that there doesn't seem to be any rush from Paramount to get the sequel out. The studio was probably surprised with the success of A Quiet Place and knows that it has something good on its hands, but instead of rushing to capitalize and risking putting out a subpar sequel, the team is being allowed to take its time to come up with the right story.

The other thing that more time affords, in theory, is a greater possibility that John Krasinski could return to direct. With the success of A Quiet Place, John Krasinski is going to have no shortage of offers on the table now that he has announced himself as a director to watch. That's in addition to the fact that he has an ongoing TV series, Jack Ryan, that premieres on Amazon Prime later this summer and has already been picked up for a second season. Then, of course, there is the fan-driven hope that he will be Reed Richards in an MCU Fantastic Four movie. So he is a busy guy, but if the sequel is allowed to build organically, maybe the schedule will work out so that he can return to the director's chair.

John Krasinski not only directed and starred in A Quiet Place, but he also did a rewrite on the script and made significant changes that altered the structure of the film. So having John Krasinski and his sensibilities back onboard in any capacity only bodes well for A Quiet Place 2. He even has some ideas for what the sequel could be about.

How Lashana Lynch's Captain Marvel Character Fits Into The Movie

After a decade of Marvel Cinematic Universe stories, audiences will soon finally see a female-led superhero film from the studio, as Brie Larson suits up as Captain Marvel in early 2019. Set in the mid-1990s, the film will follow Carol Danvers while she is in an elite Kree organization known as the Starforce. As Carol also has roots in the Air Force, the film will also feature her close-knit friendship with fellow Air Force fighter pilot, Maria Rambeau, played by Lashana Lynch. Maria is also a single mother whose character has rich potential in the MCU with a look back at the comics. Lynch recently described her exciting character in Captain Marvel thusly:

Maria's got a strength that's undeniable, in that you don't feel like you need to help her. She is thrown into many a situation in this movie that she's never been a part of, never seen, never experienced --- and she just learns it, immediately. She's very resilient and very strong.

In the interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lashana Lynch explained that Maria Rambeau and Carol Danvers have flown together for years. The actress has had brief roles on various television shows such as ABC's Still Star-Crossed, but her role as Maria will certainly be a career highlight. Maria has a young daughter named Monica, who in the comics grows up to be one of the most prominent African-American female Marvel characters, as she is also the first African-American to join and lead the Avengers. Monica Rambeau is known as the first Captain Marvel before Carol Danvers (who was previously best known as Ms. marvel) took the name in 2012. Now, Monica most popularly goes by Photon in the comics, which is also Maria's Air Force call sign in Captain Marvel, as displayed on her aircraft.

While the potential for Monica Rambeau/Photon to make her debut in the MCU is unlikely to happen in Captain Marvel since the film is set in the '90s, Monica could be ready to suit up in time for Avengers 4 or MCU films to follow that take place in present day when she is a grown woman. In the comics, before becoming a harbor patrol officer with energy-manipulating powers, she grows up in New Orleans, and Captain Marvel took its production to the city earlier this summer, originally having fans speculating about Lashana Lynch's role. While Captain Marvel won't be an origin story for Carol Danvers, it could be a bit an origin for Photon, no matter how small. Lynch also told EW about the female dynamic on set. In her words:

There's a certain level of female sisterhood that I haven't seen in a superhero film before, that we have in abundance.

After seeing the power of Black Panther, Lashana Lynch also mentioned the importance she feels to depict a positive African-American character that the black community can trust. Among the excitement of the female-led Captain Marvel, get ready for Lynch as Maria, also alongside Jude Law and Samuel L. Jackson, among many others. The movie is coming to theaters on March 8, 2019.
