Why A Wrinkle In Time Cut One Of The Books Weirdest Scenes

Adapting any literary story to the screen comes with a distinct set of challenges, and those challenges are compounded by a piece of literature as dense and complicated as A Wrinkle in Time. As a result, a number of changes had to be made to Ava DuVernay's take on the tale, including the omission of the beloved Aunt Beast scene from Madeleine L'Engle's original text. Discussing Aunt Beast with CinemaBlend at the film's recent press junket, screenwriter Jennifer Lee admitted that the scene actually was in the movie for quite a while until they decided that the celestial being removed agency from the arc of Meg Murry (Storm Reid). Lee explained:

I'd say Aunt Beast was in there until a few months ago, so Aunt Beast did not go lightly. We all fought for her, including Ava, and it wasn't that we were fighting any one entity saying couldn't do it. We were fighting to try to make it work for ourselves. But the truth was what it did in the book for Meg that it could do, took away from the journey that needed to happen in the film. In the book, she's guided. It's lessons she's learning along the way. It was beautiful entities that are nurturing. Here we had a girl who's about to go in to face, the ultimate, The It, and we really need to arm her with nothing. She had to go in there as raw and as wounded and in feeling the wounds of her father. That moment of finding him and realizing he's not the answer to everything and that the pain is still there. Her brother is still in trouble and she's the only one who can fix it and not being armed with all this support before she walked in because that's not what you get in life. So in some ways when we watched it without, we realized it was the right journey for the film, but I still carry Aunt Beast with me because she was my favorite, but I get it.

So, it sounds like there was a version of the A Wrinkle in Time film adaptation that actually included the bizarre Aunt Beast scene, in which the alien being nourishes Meg and gives her the strength to rescue Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe). But the film places an even more profound emphasis on the fact that this is Meg's journey, and for the story to work, everyone involved in the movie felt that it was best to remove that source of comfort and force Meg into a situation in which she had to find the strength to win on her own.

It is worth mentioning that the Aunt Beast scene's omission doesn't inherently mean that Aunt Beast doesn't get a shout-out in the movie. During the sequence in which the ensemble travels to the home of The Happy Medium (Zach Galifianakis), the vision that Meg sees of the cosmos offers up a brief glimpse at Aunt Beast on Ixchel. She's still in the movie, but her relevance to the core narrative is significantly reduced.

First Look At Will Smith As Genie In Disney's Live-Action Aladdin

The trend of nostalgia has been ruling the entertainment world, as audiences long to return to a simpler time. Disney has been cashing in on this fad, largely through live-action adaptations of classic animated blockbusters. Massive success followed projects like Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, and Maleficent, and next up is the highly anticipated Aladdin movie.

Aladdin will return to Agrabah, following up on the 1992 classic. All eyes are on what the new cast will bring to the table, especially Will Smith's Genie. He's got big magical shoes to fill, and now cinephiles can have their first peek at the Genie, alongside the new Aladdin and Jasmine. Check it out.

One thing is clear, Disney fans have never had a friend like Will Smith's Genie. His look is majorly different, and likely teases a brand new version of the beloved Robin Williams character.

Will Smith is rocking a very ornate look for his version of Aladdin's Genie, a stark juxtaposition to the original cartoon character. Rather than taking on a blue skin, the costume is bringing the color to the character. The movie also appears not to be doing any crazy CGI to alter Smith's appearance, letting the Suicide Squad actor be visibly himself, while also playing the magical companion of Aladdin. Then again, the story by EW revealed the look is still being tinkered with, so we may see a more magical genie yet.

Aladdin's costume for Will Smith is very reminiscent of the character's appearance from the popular Broadway show of the same name. Still running strong, the stage Genie wears a very similar costume, therefore allowing the actor to move and sing freely without having to wipe blue paint off his body every night. Take a look at the photo below for reference.

Pretty similar, right? It seems like director Guy Ritchie and the crew of Aladdin are combining elements of both the original film and the Broadway musical, bringing the beloved property to live-action for the first time.

Will Smith is surrounded by Aladdin's title character, as well as Jasmine. Aladdin is played by Mena Massoud, who can also be seen in Amazon's Jack Ryan series. Power Rangers alum Naomi Scott is taking on the role of Jasmine, with both actors looking much more traditional in their costuming.

Why The Wasp's Origin Story Will Be Unusual, According To Evangeline Lilly

Scott Lang may have been Ant-Man's main protagonist, but if it wasn't for Hope van Dyne and Hank Pym's training, he wouldn't have mastered shrinking and been able to properly hold his own in a fight. Ant-Man chronicled Scott's journey to becoming a superhero, but in the movie's mid-credits scene, we learned that Hope would be setting off on that journey soon, too. This summer, Ant-Man and the Wasp will finally see Hope suiting up as The Wasp, but unlike other superhero origin stories, you won't see her making a lot of mistakes during her first costumed outing. As Evangeline Lilly explained:

You've never seen a superhero origin story with less blunders. She knows what she's doing, and she's been grooming herself for this moment her whole life. The satisfaction in watching her finally get to live it out is really fun.

Looking back on Hope van Dyne's role in Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly's comment to USA Today makes sense. Hope may not have been the one who donned the Ant-Man suit, but between being a skilled fighter and having plenty of experience with communicating and controlling ants, she was way more qualified to harness the power of the Pym Particles. The only reason she didn't become Ant-Woman (or whatever you want to call her) is because Scott was a better thief and Hank was worried about losing his daughter like his lost his wife, Janet. Now that she has her own super suit, Hope can finally put her skills to proper use and needn't worry about learning the "craft" as she goes along.

That being said, being a superhero isn't easy, no matter how experienced you are. Throw in a healthy amount of unpredictability, and it stands to reason that Hope will probably make a mistake or two during Ant-Man and the Wasp. She just won't make as many as she would have if she was a novice.

Picking up after Scott Lang was broken out of The Raft prison at the end of Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man and the Wasp will follow Scott trying to balance his home life with his responsibilities as Ant-Man, but when Hank Pym and Hope van Dyne track him down and recruit him for a new mission (which will involve them attempting to venture into the Quantum Realm), he'll learn to work in the field alongside Hope in her new costumed persona. Along with most of the original movie's cast returning, Ant-Man and the Wasp's new players include Michelle Pfeiffer's Janet van Dyne, Laurence Fishburne's Bill Foster, Hannah John-Kamen's Ghost, Walton Goggins' Sonny Burch and Randall Park's Jimmy Woo.
