Steven Spielberg Clarifies His Opinion On Netflix

Steven Spielberg Clarifies His Opinion On Netflix

Last years awards buzz for Alfonso Cuarons Netflix film Roma rocked the boat in Hollywood for a number of reasons. One, because it started a kerfuffle between Netflix and theater chains about their 90-day exclusivity window. Two: it began a conversation about whether films produced by streaming services should be eligible for Oscar nominations and also sparked the alleged Spielberg vs. Netflix conflict.

According to legendary E.T. director, the latter has been blown out of proportion in the media in recent months. Steven Spielberg penned an email to the New York Times to clarify his comments on streaming services. Take a look:

I want people to find their entertainment in any form or fashion that suits them. Big screen, small screen what really matters to me is a great story and everyone should have access to great stories. However, I feel people need to have the opportunity to leave the safe and familiar of their lives and go to a place where they can sit in the company of others and have a shared experience cry together, laugh together, be afraid together so that when its over they might feel a little less like strangers. I want to see the survival of movie theaters. I want the theatrical experience to remain relevant in our culture.

Steven Spielberg also noted that his gripes werent with Netflix specifically about producing movies for home viewing, but the various theater chains who have turned the streaming giant away from showing their original films because of the 90-day exclusivity window theaters have been sticking to. Hes advocating for the continuation of the theater experience more than anything, though his comments have previously been characterized as an attack on Netflix and streaming as a medium.

When major chains AMC and Regal rejected the idea of showing Roma in their theaters because of the fact it would be available to stream before the three month period, the filmmaker actually called them up and asked them if theyd make an exception and they refused. Spielberg is only opting for streaming services, theater chains and traditional studios to work together to preserve moviegoing over couch-potatoing. Heres some of his comments from his infamous speech in February that was part of the conflict:

I hope all of us really continue to believe that the greatest contributions we can make as filmmakers is to give audiences the motion picture theatrical experience. Im a firm believer that movie theaters need to be around forever.

It was said that Spielberg was heading to a board meeting with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Tuesday night to change the rule about the current eligibility of streaming service films to be nominated for Oscars, the filmmaker did not attend and no amendments to the rules were made.

While Steven Spielberg has been vocal about his ongoing intentions to preserve the theater experience, his production company Amblin is working on three television series with streaming platforms: Amazon Primes Cortes and Moctezuma, Apples Amazing Stories and Hulus Animaniacs reboot. He is also a Netflix subscriber himself who has binged original content such as The Haunting of Hill House.

The ongoing conflict here seems to primarily be between streaming services and theater chains. Recently reports that Netflix may buy its own theater (The Egyptian on Hollywood Boulevard) could signal the start of an expansion in the way the platform does business and makes their films accessible.

Jessica Chastains Character Will Fight All The X-Men At Once In Dark Phoenix

Jessica Chastains Character Will Fight All The X-Men At Once In Dark Phoenix

Just like in X-Men: The Last Stand more than a decade ago, next year's Dark Phoenix will see the X-Men going up against a Jean Grey who loses control of her psionic abilities and unleashes her Phoenix self upon the world. However, she isn't the only threat in this movie, as Jessica Chastain's mysterious character is also lurking in the shadows. There are still a lot of unanswered questions about this individual, but according to Chastain, at one point during Dark Phoenix, her character will be tussling with all the X-Men at once. Chastain added:

And I'm really tough, so it was fun.

Jessica Chastain revealed this intriguing plot point during the Dark Phoenix presentation at CCXP in So Paulo this past weekend (via Twitter user Lodix). The actress didn't elaborate on what this particular battle will look like, but at least her comments assure fans that this character won't just be sticking to behind-the-scenes manipulation. There will come a time when she'll need to get her hands dirty, and evidently she's powerful enough to handle a lot of mutants coming at her.

It had previously been revealed that Jessica Chastain's Dark Phoenix character is an alien shapeshifter who comes to Earth to try to manipulate the corrupted Jean Grey into doing her bidding, with director Simon Kinberg describing her as the "devil on Jean's shoulder." Beyond that, there hasn't been much in the way of specifics concerning Chastain's character, although Kinberg also called her an amalgamation of several existing X-Men characters, like Mastermind, who played an integral role in the classic Dark Phoenix Saga comic book storyline. As Kinberg put it:

I will say that Jessica's character is not Mastermind but there are elements of the way Mastermind manipulates Jean that Jessica's character does employ. For me, as you'll see, that Jessica's character has elements of a few different characters from the comics.

Back when it was first revealed that Jessica Chastain's Dark Phoenix character was a shapeshifter hailing from another world, it was then rumored that she might be a Skrull, as that race of aliens are among the few characters/properties that 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios can both use in their respective Marvel movies (although once Fox is absorbed into the Disney empire, it'll be a moot point). That has yet to be officially confirmed or denied, although with Captain Marvel introducing its own Skrulls next March, I'm guessing that the shapeshifters in Dark Phoenix, assuming others besides Chastain's character appear, will hail from a different planet.

As we saw in the Dark Phoenix trailer, Sophie Turner's version of Jean Grey, just like her comic book counterpart and Famke Janssen's version before her, will be a powerhouse more than capable of leaving death and destruction by herself. Still, it is interesting to hear that there will be a point in the movie that Jessica Chastain's character will have to clash with all the X-Men. It's unclear whether Chastain meant the main X-Men team (i.e. Beast, Cyclops, Storm, etc) or if characters like Magneto are also being thrown into the mix.

Either way, it just goes to show that when necessary, Jessica Chastain's character can hold her own and tangle with a bunch of powered people at once. Judging by the scale of this fight, I can't help but wonder if unlike Mystique, Chastain's character can use her shapeshifting abilities to replicate a mutant's power, hence how she's able to fight off an entire group. It's also a good bet that this fight will take place during Dark Phoenix's climax as opposed to being an earlier showdown.

The inclusion of Jessica Chastain's character is just one of the ways Dark Phoenix is differentiated its adaptation of the The Dark Phoenix Saga from what X-Men: The Last Stand did in 2006. This time around, Jean's Phoenix corruption is taking place in the early 1990s, following in the "First Class" tradition of jumping forward approximately a decade with each new movie. Jean's change will also be triggered while the X-Men are on a rescue mission out in space, which is somewhat similar to how Jean's first Phoenix transformation went down in the comics.

Along with Jessica Chastain's character, Dark Phoenix is introducing mutants Selene and Red Lotus, played by Kota Eberhardt and Andrew Stehlin, respectively. Daniel Cudmore, who played Colossus in three previous X-Men movies, and Lamar Johnson have also been cast in undisclosed roles.

As for familiar faces, most of the players from X-Men: Apocalypse will be back, from Professor X and Magneto to Quicksilver and Psylocke. That said, it was rumored last year that one of the characters in Dark Phoenix who's been around the franchise since 2011's X-Men: First Class, will be killed off. That's been seemingly confirmed from the pictures and footage showing Professor X, Cyclops, Nightcrawler and Storm at a funeral (I suspect it will be Mystique biting the dust). So in addition to the standard civilian casualties you come to expect from superhero movies, it looks like someone important will be departing to the great beyond during Jean Grey's rampage.

The future of the X-Men franchise beyond Dark Phoenix is shrouded in mystery, although it's expected that eventually these characters will eventually be absorbed into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and rebooted for a new era. If that is indeed the case, then Dark Phoenix looks to be ending the current franchise things with a bang. Jean unleashing her enhanced powers will obviously be a huge part of this, but I am curious to see what Jessica Chastain's character offers in the way of sheer brute force.

Dark Phoenix was originally supposed to be released on November 2, but it was pushed to February 14, 2019, and now it's set to hit theaters on June 7, 2019, which Simon Kinberg believes is a date that will allow the movie to perform better globally. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for continuing coverage. In the meantime, you can look through our X-Men movies guide to learn what other mutant-centric projects are in development, or check out our 2019 release schedule to find out what other movies are coming out next year.

In Honor Of Mute, Paul Rudd's 10 Best Roles, Ranked

In Honor Of Mute, Paul Rudd's 10 Best Roles, Ranked

Ironically, Paul Rudd's "biggest" role might be for his smallest character. The world currently knows Rudd as Scott Lang, the insect-sized hero Ant-Man in the ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe. But to only associate Rudd with this comic-book role is to overlook -- and under-value -- the versatile work this performer has been doing in assorted projects for decades.

Movie fans are going to see a completely unexpected and unpredictable side of Paul Rudd when Duncan Jones' sci-fi thriller Mute opens on Netflix on February 23. Yes, the early buzz swirled around Rudd's magnificent mustache, a bold swath of facial hair that takes up a lot of real estate on the actor's handsome face. But once they settle into Jones' gritty parable, they'll realize that Rudd's character, Cactus Bill, actually marks a stark departure from the performer's everyman shtick, instantly becoming one of his most memorable roles.

In the film, Cactus Bill and his partner, Duck (Justin Theroux), work as surgeons for a team of gangsters who have a vice grip on Germany's seedy criminal underbelly. Bill and Duck each have personal and professional goals -- which I can't get into here, because it would ruin some of Mute's best surprises -- but their interactions with a silent bartender (Alexander Skarsgard) threaten the duo's way of life... and possibly their futures. Where does Cactus Bill from Mute land on the list of incredible Rudd roles? Read on to find out.

10. Bobby Newport, Parks and RecreationSome actors get pigeonholed as either "TV personalities" or "big screen movie stars," but precious few transition back and forth with the ease that Paul Rudd has managed. Maybe it's because, instead of trying to carry his own sitcom, Rudd has chosen his moments to shine on previously established shows like Friends (as you will see later on this list) and Parks and Recreation. Bobby Newport is the dopey son of a rich, entitled family who makes life extremely difficult for Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler). The fact that he's too dumb to realize how annoying he is turns out to be the comedic icing on the cake.

9. Chuck, Forgetting Sarah MarshallPaul Rudd's a brilliant comedian who always understands what's hilarious about the situation that he's in. That being said, some of his most memorable comedic turns have been playing dumb dudes, and few are more vacant and empty-headed than his scene-stealing surf instructor, Chuck, from Forgetting Sarah Marshall. And in one of his funniest lines, the motivational idiot explains to Jason Segel, "The less you do, the more you do." It sums up Rudd's approach to comedy in a nutshell.

8. Ben Benjamin, The Fundamentals of CaringPaul Rudd's a likable guy who frequently plays clueless idiots. But every once in a while, a filmmaker will see in Rudd his ability to be earnest and humble while also maintaining the sarcastic edge that comes to him so easily. Netflix's original film The Fundamentals of Caring expertly shows that side of Rudd, as his character Ben agrees to be a caregiver for a handicapped young man, only to find these opposing personalities at odds with each other as they embark on an important road trip. Caring shows all of what Rudd has to offer as an actor, and a comedian.

7. Mike Hannigan, FriendsPaul Rudd knew that he could succeed as a small part of a popular sitcom because he'd tried it once before, on Friends, with spectacular results. The NBC sitcom stunt-casted so many love interests for the various Friends core cast, from Tom Selleck to Brad Pitt. But Rudd's quirky Mike was the ideal match for Lisa Kudrow's Phoebe, to the point where some fans of the TV series thought of him as the seventh Friend.

6. Pete, Knocked Up and This is 40Paul Rudd isn't opposed to sequels (he's in the MCU, after all), but his return as Pete was unexpected -- primarily because he and Leslie Mann were side characters in Judd Apatow's Knocked Up. But audiences responded to their chemistry as a married couple, so Apatow was inspired to follow their journey when he brought them back for This is 40. We still love Pete and Debbie, and could easily see Apatow doing one or two more of these as his cast ages.

5. Andy, Wet Hot American SummerPaul Rudd brings a certain amount of childishness to most of his roles, but that's particularly true of teenage heartthrob Andy in David Wain's Wet Hot American Summer (despite the fact that Rudd was 32 when the film debuted.) Channeling his inner douchebag, Rudd delivers a perfect encapsulation of the 1980s jock clich while also embracing the absurd. Andy's the epitome of a negligent camp counselor; he'll let a kid drown while he makes out with a girl at the lifeguard tower, and then dispose of any witnesses who call him on it. That being said, Rudd still manages to make him lovable every step of the way.

4. Cactus Bill, MuteWithout exaggeration, Cactus Bill is unlike any other character Paul Rudd has played before. As you can see, if you made it this far down the list, Rudd excels at comedy. But when he allows his charismatic personality to go dark, we find Cactus Bill -- a homicidal surgeon who is protecting himself and those close to him, even though his loyalties pivot like a weathervane in a tornado. But we buy into Bill's menace because Paul Rudd's such a convincing actor, and his turn is just one of the reasons why you'll still be thinking about Mute long after you've reached the end credits.

3. Scott Lang, Ant-ManMost people play "superhero" as kids, but precious few grow up to see that dream realized. The actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe are holding down the fort on a supremely impressive accomplishment -- the creation of a multi-phase movie world that's bigger and more diverse than anything we've seen before. And Paul Rudd has a part to play, which is "small" (the size of an ant) but also very large! Rudd stole the show in Captain America: Civil War when he grew to skyscraper size, and should continue to bring his relatable humanity when Thanos (Josh Brolin) attacks our planet in Avengers: Infinity War.

2. Josh, CluelessPeople probably forget that Clueless is the movie that put Paul Rudd on the map. But even if he never appeared in another film, Rudd could have hung his hat on Clueless and called it a career. Yes, Alicia Silverstone was the center of that universe. But Rudd's take on Josh, the love interest who was too busy with life to notice the airheaded-ness of Cher (Silverstone), gave Clueless the heart that it needed to cement itself as a generational classic. The movie showed how charming and funny Rudd could be on screen, and it ensured that he'd be a leading man for years to come.

1. Brian Fantana, AnchormanCould it be anyone else besides Brian Fantana? The one-time newsman turned professional cat photographer stands out as one of the most memorable role players in a brilliant comedic ensemble in the movie Anchorman. Whether he's dousing himself in Sex Panther or helping Ron avoid bears, Paul Rudd dials into his dumb-guy routine with lethal precision, bouncing along with amazing improvisational speeds and somehow managing not to crack a smile at his equally hilarious co-stars. Sixty percent of the time, Brian Fantana works every time, and that's why he is No. 1 on this list. The above article was sponsored by Netflix's Mute. You can check out the film exclusively on the streaming service.

Paul Rudd takes the straight forward role of sales rep for an energy drink company and makes it complex and endearing. Having just been fired, along with his partner (Seann William Scott), for having a public breakdown after his girlfriend breaks up with him, they are assigned probation where they will mentor two unruly teens.
