Why A Star Wars Slowdown Is Exactly What Disney Needs

When Disney purchased Lucasfilm and announced the return of Star Wars back in 2012, fans could rejoice in knowing there may never again be a time without Star Wars. For a while after the purchase, decades between trilogies and years between films were a thing of the past. Between the Saga films and the spinoff anthology movies, there was a constant supply of Star Wars, enough to sate even the most voracious of fans. Plus, given Disney's success with its Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seemed inevitable that Star Wars would eventually move to a model of multiple films a year.

That was then.

Now Star Wars is pumping the brakes and dropping out of hyperspace with a lurch in the wake of Solo: A Star Wars Story. Bob Iger recently admitted that it was his mistake to push out too many Star Wars films too fast and that we can expect some slowdown from the franchise. He indicated that moving forward Disney would be more careful about the volume of how many Star Wars movies come out and the timing of when they arrive.

Now, this move could be seen by some as premature or an overreaction to Solo's performance. Regardless of whether timing is what felled Solo at the box office or if it was just one of numerous issues that did it in, the impetus to take a more restrained approach in the future is the right one. In fact, I think a Star Wars slowdown is exactly what Disney needs right now. Here's why:

There Will Still Be Plenty Of Star Wars On TVEven if a slowdown means that we have to wait a little longer between movies, there will still be plenty of new Star Wars content for the avid fan to enjoy. Star Wars Rebels is over and a new animated series is coming to Disney Channel next month. Star Wars Resistance will tell stories in a time period we haven't seen explored yet, between the end of The Return of the Jedi and months before The Force Awakens. If that animated series skews a bit too young for you, no matter, that's not the only Star Wars TV series on the way. Star Wars: The Clone Wars is returning next year to finish up its run. Beyond that, Jon Favreau is working on a live-action series for Disney's upcoming streaming service. The wildly expensive series will be set 7 years after Return of the Jedi and will hopefully have the kind of high quality storytelling we've come to expect from prestige television. So despite any big screen slowdown, there will still be plenty of Star Wars content on TV in the years ahead to keep fans happy, to say nothing of the other in-canon materials like the novels and comics.

Absence Makes The Heart Grow FonderTo be clear, we will never again experience the kind of frenzy that accompanied the return of Star Wars with The Force Awakens in 2015, that magical time before The Last Jedi when fans of the prequels and fans of the original trilogy came together as one in excitement for the return of their favorite franchise. Those who felt burned by the prequels were excited about Star Wars again and the sins of the past were forgiven. We'll never have a drought like that again but a slowdown in frequency of any kind will do a service to Star Wars. For those who didn't like The Last Jedi, time will theoretically allow their frustrations to ebb and their desire to see a new Star Wars movie grow. And the same will apply to any future movie that receives a divided reaction. I'm not saying that fans that hated a movie will come around on it, but passions die hard and even the Prequels have come to be appreciated more than they once were. A slowdown in the frequency of Star Wars films makes people miss them more and that makes them overlook past offenses to get excited again.

Star Wars Is Not MarvelLike Marvel, Star Wars is an incredibly lucrative and popular property that falls under the Disney umbrella. Despite those similarities, Star Wars is not Marvel. Just because the MCU can do three movies a year, and probably more if Disney were so inclined, doesn't mean that's right for Star Wars. Just because there are no signs of superhero fatigue does not mean the same holds true for Star Wars. We don't know what the right number of Star Wars films a year should be and the answer may be fluid, depending on the films themselves. We'll never go back to once every three years but maybe somewhere between once every 8-12 months. A slowdown allows Disney to approach the timing and frequency of these movies with greater care to find the right balance to prevent audience fatigue. Also, Marvel may be the biggest cash cow at the moment, but Star Wars has always felt different, more special. The infrequency, the Christmas releases, the history, it all give Star Wars an intangible quality that no other franchise has. Disney should endeavor to maintain that as much as possible to preserve the Star Wars brand for years to come.

Time To Get Things RightSince Star Wars returned under the Disney banner, nearly every film has been under the gun to make release dates, production problems be damned. Although there have been some delays, we now know that part of the reason that Solo was released in May, was to make Disney's current fiscal year. Maybe a December release and more time for reshoots and post-production to really make Solo the best film it could be wouldn't have made a difference and it still would have disappointed. Yet, the lesson here is still applicable. Business dictating art can be bad for business. Disney is a for-profit company and has obligations to its shareholders. Regardless, when those fiscal motivations ultimately harm the product and damage the brand, that's not good for anyone's bottom-line long term. A slowdown should give Disney time to get things right and ensure that each new Star Wars film is a quality product that lives up to the brand and fan expectations. If delays or longer periods between films are necessary so be it. Fans will forgive a long wait if a film is great, but when you put out a sub-par movie, that's forever.

How Important Maria and Monica Rambeau Can Be To The MCU After Captain Marvel

This article contains major SPOILERS for Captain Marvel, so turn back if you havent yet blasted off with the high-flying hero in theaters yet.

Amidst a grand introduction to the all-powerful Captain Marvel into the Marvel Cinematic Universe before the Avengers gear up for round two with Thanos, there was a subtle introduction to another key Marvel Comics superhero. Monica Rambeau, the daughter of Carols best friend Maria, has an intriguing history in the comics, which most certainly could be in plans to be explored in Phase 4 that is if the MCU decides to act on those nudges and hints sprinkled throughout Captain Marvel.

So lets recap who the Rambeaus are in the comic books, how they were introduced in Captain Marvel and how they could tie into the MCU moving forward:

What Are Their Comic Book Origins?In the comic books, Monica Rambeau held the title of Captain Marvel before Carol Danvers did when she appeared in 1982s Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16. Danvers first alias was Ms. Marvel, but she did take over the name of Captain Marvel in 2012. When we meet Rambeau, she is a lieutenant for the New Orleans Harbor Patrol as a cargo ship captain. She is on board with a special device capable of tapping into energies from other dimensions, which is intended to be used to create a dangerous weapon. Rambeau aids in destroying the device, but her exposure to the energy arms her with the power of a superhero. Sound familiar?

Monica Rambeau has the power to turn into a being of pure energy, shoot energy blasts, phase through solid matter (just as Vision does) and fly. Besides Captain Marvel, the hero has also been named Photon, Pulsar and Spectrum as well. She became the first African-American female to join the Avengers, where she was mentored by Captain America and Wasp, and once took on the mantle of Avengers leader in Wasps place. After a fight with sea monster Leviathan, Monicas powers became depleted, and she has sat out an Avengers membership for some time, but her powers did come back eventually. Her most recent team up was with the rogue superhero squad Nextwave, alongside Black Panther, Luke Cage, Blade and Brother Voodoo, who fought vampires in New Orleans.

Her mother Maria, however, has a completely different backstory than the one introduced in Captain Marvel. Maria is a successful seamstress who owns her own dress shop and is the wife of a former fireman. The mother is much more concerned parent, who, while proud of her daughters role as a superhero, often expresses her concerns for her safety.

How Does Captain Marvel Hint At The Characters Futures?In Captain Marvel, Maria and Monica Rambeau play a large part in Carol Danvers rediscovering her identity and becoming the badass superhero she transforms into by the end of the movie. The mother-daughter duo is Danvers chosen family who help jog her memory when she and Fury visit them to get answers about a mysterious fighter jet crash. Maria is not a seamstress, but an Air Force pilot, and she is not a wife, but a single mother. Monica (a.k.a. Lt. Trouble) cant help but get in on the action, help Captain Marvel with her suit and encourage her mother to be co-pilot to the final mission to set a good example for her. Monica already looks up to Carol, and then she becomes a superhero. I cant help but think this is a defining moment for her that the MCU just has to come back to.

Marias callsign is also Photon one of Monicas superhero names. When you look at how important Carol Danvers callsign ended up being to the franchise (it was Avenger and inspired Fury to name the initiative), then you know how the importance in the details. At the end of the film as Carol prepares to journey across space, they have a conversation about how Monica may have to build a spaceship of her own one day to visit her Skrull friends.

The factor of time also plays a part here. Captain Marvel is set in 1995 and Monica is eleven years old, and we know Carol will appear next in Avengers: Endgame, which takes place in present day. If Carols story continues after the events of Endgame, Monica would be in her mid-30s, the perfect age to fix right in with the rest of the Avengers and assume her rightful comic book role.

How Monica and Maria Rambeau Could Tie Into The MCU?After these hints to the heros origin, how could the MCU not explore the Rambeaus in future films? They are particularly close to Carol Danvers heart (just like Bucky Barnes is to Captain America) and could serve as the key story element to future Captain Marvel sequels (which I don't doubt is on the way considering that Earth shattering box office debut). I imagine after Endgame, Carol finds herself back on Earth and either cant help looking the Rambeaus up or is approached by an all-grown up Monica. While I hope Maria appears again, I don't think she'll have as vital of a role as Monica.

Considering theories that heroes such as Captain America and Iron Man will be hanging up their role post-Endgame among others, a mentorship between the characters might be part of how the franchise moves forward and starts buffing up their heroes back up as other longtime heroes head to the door. While we know little about whats coming next for the MCU until after Endgame and Far From Home (and all plans are being held until then), the inclusion of Monica certainly hints at plans to a new generation of the Avengers, who could be completely different then the main crew we already know and how key Captain Marvel could be to the development of them.

The MCUs continuing focus on diversity following the monumental success of Black Panther is glimmered into the DNA of Captain Marvel, as the teams first official female African-American hero could soon take flight. The character has infinite possibilities, all the way up to becoming the next Captain Marvel and leader of the next Avengers team. I wouldnt doubt that this is the direction the MCU is going, thanks to the subtle introduction of the Rambeaus in the Marvel film that touches so deeply into the Avengers roots. Fury will certainly vouch for her.

While the number of questions regarding how things will end for our heroes in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker are nearly infinite, Rey, Finn and Poe aren't the only characters we wonder about. Naomi Ackie has been added to the cast as an all new character, and we know essentially nothing about her, except her character's name, Jannah.

Naomi Ackie and Jannah were introduced to the crowd at the recent Star Wars Celebration in Chicago and panel moderator Stephen Colbert asked Ackie about rumors that Jannah might actually be the daughter of Lando Calrissian. As one might expect, Ackie didn't really answer the question, but she also didn't not answer the question. It's certainly possible that Jannah could be Lando's daughter, because Lando probably has a lot of daughters, and sons too. According to the actress...

Listen, Lando is a charming man, so he could have children all over the universe.

The Star Wars Celebration panel was very focused on making sure that no details about The Rise of Skywalker were revealed beyond those details that were planned to be released. We got a single still shot of the character of Jannah, but nothing beyond that, meaning that we have no idea how she fits into the story. About all we can guess is that since she was on the SWC stage in the first place, she's important.

The idea that Jannah could be Lando Calrissian's daughter is given some strength simply due to the fact that Lando himself is returning for the final episode of the new trilogy. We don't know anything as far as that character goes either. Where he's been or why he's back now is a mystery.

Based on the simple still image of Jannah, if she is Lando's daughter, she hasn't really taken after her father, one wonders if he actually raised her. Lando is always looking quite suave and that's not the vibe we're getting from Jannah here. Whatever she's up to, she's getting her hands dirty.

In the same way that Rey being a Skywalker or a Kenobi seemed a little too on the nose, I doubt Jannah is a Calrissian. It's simply unlikely that there's a need for such a connection to exist and Jannah being somebody else, anybody else, helps to expand the galaxy in a new way, which has clearly been part of the goal for this trilogy.

Odds are that if we knew who Jannah really was it would just create more questions. The big answer we were all waiting for, the film's title, certainly does that. Nobody knows what The Rise of Skywalker really means, though we all have our theories, which is the point. Jannah's history can be another topic of conversation that should keep fans busy until the new trilogy comes to a close this December.
