Samuel L. Jackson Is Giving Mixed Signals About Working With The Cat On Captain Marvel

It's a particularly exciting time in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as there are just two more releases left in the highly successful Phase Three. Before it all comes to an end with Avengers: Endgame, Carol Danvers will get a 1990's origin story in Captain Marvel. In addition to bringing the title character to audiences, Anna Boden andRyan Fleck's Marvel blockbuster will also feature plenty of familiar faces including Phil Coulson, Ronan The Accuser, Korath, and Nick Fury. The latter is played by the always delightful Samuel L. Jackson, who is saying some conflicting things about Carol's pet cat Goose.

Goose has been rumored to be stealing the show in Captain Marvel, which arrives in theaters in a matter of days. Samuel L. Jackson and Brie Larson had to work with a number of cats during filming, and it doesn't seem like either of them are exactly cat people. When speaking with CinemaBlend's own Sarah El-Mahmoud, Jackson seemed to have worked well with his feline co-stars, saying:

There were actually four cats, Reggie was the main cat we worked with, he adjusted to us and was more people friendly than I think the others were. Yeah, always a good day when he was there. All snack based, you give them the right snack at the right time and use the right tone of voice. He was a very accomplished and fun cat to work with. He always hit his mark, always look at you and do what he was supposed to do, he was friendly.

Cats aren't known for being overly friendly, so it must be somewhat nerve-wracking to act alongside them. But as Samuel L. Jackson told CinemaBlend, there was one Goose actor that was a bit more easy to get along with. That cat was Reggie, who is reportedly doing much of the film's heavy lifting as Goose the cat. But now the question is: is Reggie the one on the awesome character posters?

Seems like Samuel L. Jackson had a pretty copacetic relationship with the cats on Captain Marvel's set, right? Well, it turns out he might have been a bit less enthused than he let on to CinemaBlend.

Given how much buzz is around Goose's role in Captain Marvel, Samuel L. Jackson has fielded plenty of questions about the feline cast member. After all, there's that old saying about working with animals and children in show business. When speaking with io9 about his role as Nick Fury, Jackson revealed he wasn't a big fan of the cats. Mostly because he's not a pet person in general. As he tells it:

No, I am not a cat person. But Im also not a dog, bird or a fish person, either. I dont engage pets. You know, Reggie is like most animals that people bring to set that have been trained to do this, that, or the other hes snack-oriented. You give him something to eat, he shows up. You give him something to eat, you talk softly and nice to him, give him something to eat again. They love you. You know, so, it works out. And there were actually four cats, but Reggie did the majority of the heavy lifting most of the time.

Well, that certainly paints a different picture. It looks like working with Reggie and the rest of the cats wasn't exactly Samuel L. Jackson's cup of tea. But Nick Fury has no fear, so Jackson had to put his game face on, and try to connect with Carol Danver's pet Goose on camera. Fury can be seen petting the cat during the trailers for Captain Marvel, already proving that the actor succeeded in making that specific situation work. As if we'd expect anything else from Sam Jackson.

Goose may be poised to be a scene stealer in Captain Marvel, but some changes were already made to the character from the Marvel comics. Namely, Carol Danver's pet was given a different name. In the comics, he's called Chewie-- named after Chewbacca from the Star Wars franchise. That ultimately got canned for the live-screen adaptation, and he was given the name of another well-known fictional character: Goose, Anthony Edwards's character from Top Gun. This is an especially adept pop culture reference, given that Tom Cruise will bring back the franchise with Top Gun: Maverick.

The cat's name was changed from Chewie to Goose to it would relate even close to Carol Danver's mysterious time on Earth. Brie Larson's hero is an Air Force pilot, so it makes sense that Top Gun might be an important movie from her past. This will no doubt create plenty of opportunities for comedy in Captain Marvel, as the MCU has made levity an important part of its formula over the years. We'll see just how much Goose factors into the narrative when Captain Marvel arrives in theaters in a matter of days.

Smart money says that Goose won't be just a regular cat in Captain Marvel. With the movie's story tied to the cosmic side of the MCU, fans assumed the cat might end up actually being an alien of some sort. That also vibes with Chewie's backstory from the page. The cat is actually a creature called a Flerken, and has even come to blows with Rocket Raccoon. If Goose joins Captain Marvel for her highly anticipated role in Avengers: Endgame, that could even come to fruition in The Russo Brothers' upcoming blockbuster.

Indeed, Captain Marvel has been teased to have a major role in the future of the MCU. With so many of the OG Avengers likely departing due to actors' contracts coming to an end, the new class of heroes will be needed to fill in the gaps. Cue Brie Larson's Carol Danvers, teased to be the most powerful hero in the shared universe.

European royalty has become a particularly fertile landscape for film and television in recent years, with movies like The King's Speech and TV shows like The Crown gaining widespread notoriety for their depictions of the monarchy. For 2018, it looks like we have another notably impressive entry in that subgenre, as a trailer for Mary Queen of Scots has just debuted, and it promises an utterly transformative performance from Margot Robbie as Queen Elizabeth I. Mary Queen of Scots centers on the historic rivalry that surfaced between cousins Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan) and Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie). The film follows the deterioration of their relationship, which eventually sees Mary attempt to overthrow Elizabeth through a military coup. Based on John Guy's book, My Heart Is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots, the film takes a gritty look at the sixteenth-century drama and features some incredible-looking performances by its leads -- particularly Robbie, who is nearly unrecognizable as Elizabeth.

Of course, one of the things that's easy to note right off the bat is the fact that Margot Robbie's performance in the movie looks particularly transformative. Her take on Queen Elizabeth I not only draws out some genuinely passionate moments from her character, but the sheer amount of makeup, costume work, and overall physical effort that has gone into her particular look in the movie seems stunning. The Australian actress has become notably skilled at transforming herself for her roles (see: Suicide Squad and I, Tonya), and it appears that Mary Queen of Scots could be another example of that trend.

Another thing worth noting about Mary Queen of Scots is the film's potential to make an impression when awards season rolls around. The trailer directly acknowledges that this movie comes to us courtesy of the people who brought us Darkest Hour last year, and the early December release date seems to nicely position the film in a way to keep it fresh in the minds of audiences when we start looking at awards frontrunners that will pop up in the following months. Couple that with the strength of the performances based on what we can see from this preview, and it becomes apparent that Mary Queen of Scots could definitely be one of the movies to watch in the latter half of 2018.

Mary Queen of Scots will premiere in theaters later this year on December 7. There are few filmmakers quite as acclaimed as Quentin Tarantino. Specializing in highly stylized and often extremely violent stories across time, Tarantino has made a name for himself, and managed to work with some of the biggest names in film history. One of his collaborators is Jamie Foxx, who played the title character in Django Unchained. The 2012 western was critically acclaimed, accruing five Oscar nominations and box office success in the process. But there is a point of contention surrounding Django: the liberal use of the n-word. With slavery and race at the center of the film's plot, many thought it was insensitive for Tarantino to have his actors throwing around the slur so often. But Foxx has recently defended this script choice, saying:

When when Django came around, I understood the text. The N-word was said 100 times, but I understood the text --- that's the way it was back in that time.

Well, that's that. While Jamie Foxx admits that the use of the N-word was alarming at fist, he uses Django Unchained's time period and historical background as the reason for its utterance. Considering that so much of the plot revolves around a deeply racist plantation owner refusing to free his slave, Foxx and the rest of the cast seem to have made peace with hearing such a hateful word so often in the film.

Jamie Foxx's comment to Yahoo also acknowledges the controversy that is still surrounding Django Unchained's script. Because it was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, a white man, some critics felt dissonance with the film's message and it's script. Still, Django Unchained was full of already iconic performances, and is on the list of mega successful movies to come from the mind of Tarantino.

The language in Django Unchained actually isn't the only potential scandal to come from the set. Leonardo DiCaprio, who played the evil Calvin J. Candie, actually cut his hand on glass in the middle of a stirring third act monologue. While using it to inform his anger, he rubbed his bleeding hand all over the face of Kerry Washington, who played Broomhilda. But there's also something powerful about the finished product, and Django Unchained has been listed in many top film lists.

As for what's next for Quentin Tarantino, he's currently filming his next drama, Once Upon a Time In Hollywood. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt as Rick Dalton and Cliff Booth, the project will follow an actor and stunt double attempting to make it in Hollywood in the 50's and 60's. The movie will also at least partly focus on the infamous Sharon Tate murder, with Margot Robbie playing the ill-fated actress.

Ever since Justice League critically and commercially underperformed in theaters last fall, there's been a rallying cry from many fans of the DC Extended Universe for Warner Bros to release what's been called "The Snyder Cut," a version of the movie that better reflects director Zack Snyder's creative vision before he departed. It's been said that there's at least an assembly cut of Snyder's Justice League out there, but Warner Bros hasn't commented on the matter... until now. For those of you who've been hoping that the Snyder Cut would be made available to the public, I bring bad news, as it sounds like Warner Bros has no plans to release it.

With DC craving out its own chunk of the Warner Bros presentation at San Diego Comic-Con this Saturday, there'd been speculation online that some of that time would be dedicated to announcing the release of Zack Snyder's cut of Justice League. However, in a Wall Street Journal story about the Snyder Cut, a senior executive confirmed that there won't be any mention such a cut or any alternative versions of Justice League. In this crazy world, there's always the chance that the bigwigs at Warner Bros might change their minds and deliver an alternate Justice League cut at a later date. Remember, we didn't see the Richard Donner cut of Superman II until over two decades later. But for now, those of you who want to watch a live action Justice League movie will just have to turn to the theatrical cut.

Having already helmed Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder returned to direct Justice League, and he was around for the entirety of principal photography. However, after the tragic passing of his daughter, it was announced in May 2017 that Snyder had stepped away from the movie, and Joss Whedon, who had already been brought aboard to rewrite portions of the script, was tasked with overseeing Justice League during reshoots. In recent months, Snyder has been sharing behind-the-scenes photos of his time on Justice League, but Snyder's spokeswoman told WSJ that the director has never watched the Justice League theatrical cut. For those who've been following Snyder on his Vero account, this doesn't come entirely as a shock, as he previously mentioned that he had no knowledge of the Russian family in Justice League, indicating that they were added after his departure.

So there we have it. Barring any surprise announcements in the future, it looks like we can shut the book on Justice League for good. While the DCEU is pressing onwards with movies like Aquaman, Shazam! and Wonder Woman 1984, it remains to be seen if Justice League 2 will move forward, but for right now, there are no plans for Zack Snyder to direct another DC movie.
