Why Avengers: Endgame Shouldn't Introduce Any New Key Characters

As a 10 year capstone for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Joe and Anthony Russos Avengers: Infinity War was a remarkable treat. Characters from just about every corner of the vast franchise finally had the chance to interact and unite, and while the heroes mission and battle against Thanos was ultimately a failure, the film itself was magical of cinematic entertainment.

There are many reasons why the movie was a special success (and we have written about a ton of them here on CinemaBlend), but part of it is just the way in which it utilizes the tools at hand from previous Marvel Cinematic Universe chapters. With the exception of Eitri and the members of the Black Order, every principal character featured is one we previously met from another MCU film and saving time introducing new heroes and villains allowed more time to dedicate to the epic narrative. Orchestrating this was a brilliant move by the Russo brothers and screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, and hopefully it continues to be the angle taken by the filmmakers for the upcoming Avengers: Endgame.

In the months since Infinity Wars release we have heard a lot of rumors and chatter about new characters being introduced via the fourth Avengers saga, but thinking about the blockbusters potential in this arena is misguided. While it is certainly possible that Endgame will feature one or two fresh faces that will add to the ensemble of heroes and villains that populate the big screen franchise, it should be an arena where audiences temper their expectations. Whats not to be lost sight of is the fact that not only are we still waiting to see many established names join the on-going scuffle, but were also still hoping for more significant interactions between important characters that werent featured in Avengers 3, despite said characters being featured.

Right off the bat there is the Captain Marvel discussion with the heroine having been teased in the post-credits scene of Avengers: Infinity War, getting her own solo film in early March. Given the incredible power she possesses, its expected that she will have a significant impact on the events of Avengers: Endgame, and her integration into the conflict with the Mad Titan will surely be something to which the blockbuster needs to dedicate significant screen time (especially if the production wants to avoid having her be a deus ex machina introduced late in the game).

But Captain Marvel is far from the only hero in her position going into the 22nd MCU film. Fans werent exactly shy expressing their feelings about the absence of Hawkeye in Avengers: Infinity War but theres also the entire Ant-Man And The Wasp ensemble to think about, as well as Valkyrie. Theyre all expected to have some kind of role to play in the defeat of Thanos, and those are only the characters who have been confirmed to appear. There is also still hope that we can see key supporting players from the various series like Phil Coulson, Sharon and Peggy Carter, Nakia, Erik Selvig, and Happy Hogan (his deleted Infinity War scene shouldnt count).

Because Avengers: Endgame isnt going to be six hours long, the filmmakers are going to have to be careful how they balance these additions alongside the 20-plus we saw in Avengers: Infinity War without totally breaking the narrative. If this means not spending valuable time setting up heroes for Phase Four, all the better.

This whole conversation isnt even just about the cast from Avengers: Endgame being larger than that of Avengers: Infinity War, though. As alluded to, it was tremendously exciting to see members of the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy interact for the first time, but it should be recognized that there are still a lot of key characters who havent met each other yet. Ignoring the consequences of The Decimation for a moment, its noteworthy that Chris Pratts Star-Lord not only never makes it to his home planet of Earth, but also never gets to hang out with the likes of Captain America, Black Panther, Hulk, and Black Widow. Similarly, we still havent seen what Doctor Strange can do teamed up with Avengers other than Iron Man and Spider-Man and those guys also still havent had the chance to meet Rocket or Groot.

And while its really exactly a new relationship, I cant be the only one waiting to see things get resolved between Cap and Iron Man following their dispute in Captain America: Civil War. Given that the futures of both Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans in the future of Marvel Cinematic Universe is a big question mark after Avengers: Endgame, the movie definitely needs to provide some kind of conclusion for fans.

In the last nine months we have heard countless sites with unverified sources chime in with thoughts about heroes like Black Knight, Adam Warlock, and Kate Bishop being a part of Avengers: Endgame but there is honest hope on this end that we see none of them. There is a long future ahead of this franchise and will be plenty of opportunity to introduce audiences to new heroes. None of that time, or at least an extremely limited amount of that time, needs to be spent in the blockbuster thats arriving this April.

A lot of the focus of Ant-Man and the Wasp has been on the two title characters, but a superhero movie wouldn't be very good if there wasn't a villain. That's where Ghost, a mysterious antagonist with the ability to phase through solid matter, comes in. The character is played by Hannah John-Kamen, who is having a pretty banger 2018, having appeared in three blockbuster movies so far. It's likely that she didn't need much help to secure the role of Ghost, but when Steven Spielberg writes you a letter of recommendation, well, it certainly doesn't hurt.

It said, 'Dear Peyton. I'm excited you're doing the movie and I just want to put in the good word for Hannah. I worked with her and she was terrific. Signed, Steven Spielberg.'

Earlier this year, Hannah John-Kamen appeared in a small role for the Tomb Raider reboot. She followed that up with a larger supporting role in Ready Player One as F'Nale Zandor, an executive at a gaming company who had little trepidation about getting her hands dirty. The movie was directed by Steven Spielberg, who John-Kamen made quite the impression on. It was such a good experience that Spielberg had no problem writing Ant-Man and the Wasp director Peyton Reed a personal letter about how he should cast John-Kamen in the superhero sequel.

In a portfolio on Hannah John-Kamen with the Los Angeles Times, Peyton Reed detailed how he received a letter from Steven Spielberg about John-Kamen. The letter was pretty brief, but when you have a quote from Spielberg about how terrific you are, that's kind of all you really need. John-Kamen went into a bit more detail about working with Spielberg on Ready Player One, saying that the two of them would sing show tunes between scenes. (Apparently, Spielberg has a great voice).

Of course, Hannah John-Kamen was hired for more reason than just a letter from Spielberg. During her camera test, John-Kamen impressed producers with her physicality, performing stunt sequences as a part of her audition. While stunt doubles were used at points during production, the bulk of it is actually John-Kamen. Couple that with her dramatic skills and it was likely a no-brainer to hire the actress as Ghost in the fun Marvel sequel.

You don't need a letter from Spielberg to go see Ant-Man and the Wasp, out in theaters right now. The sequel is doing pretty good right now and should win the weekend by a solid amount. Glass Almost Included James McAvoy Rapping To Drake

Before superhero movies and shared universes became commonplace, M. Night Shyamalan was putting his own spin on comic book lore with 2000's Unbreakable. And when 2016's Split arrived in theaters, it's twist ending revealed the two movies were set within the same universe. That made room for Shyamalan's new release Glass, which saw the characters from both movies combine in an epic way.

Perhaps the biggest standout performance of Glass comes from James McAvoy, who played a ton of different characters throughout the film's 129 minute runtime. Reprising his role as Kevin from Split, McAvoy has to physically and vocally find a ton of separate personalities, including fan favorite Hedwig-- a nine-year old boy. Hedwig is a major fan of Drake in Glass, and the actor recently revealed the film originally including him singing to one of Drizzy Drake's tracks, saying:

There was a moment I sang a little bit of Drake and there were some proper good moves in that bit. I was like 'This is a really good bit. This is my dance bit but I'm singing Drake.' I was like 'Should we do a bit where I don't sing Drake?' because Drake's not going to give us this song for nothing.

What a smart man. Because while seeing Hedwig spit some bars form Drake's catalogue wold have made for a hilarious scene in Glass, it probably would have cost the indie superhero movie a big chunk of change. And considering that the blockbuster didn't have the massive funds available to other crossover movies like The Avengers, Drake just wasn't in the budget.

James McAvoy's comments to MTV News make a great deal of sense, given Glass' budget and M. Night Shyamalan's personal stakes in the movie. Shyamalan has been quietly been funding his past few releases, including The Visit, Split, and Glass. This is a system that seems to have been working, as each box office success fuels the next project on the director's plate.

Funding his own movies allows M. Night Shyamalan to retain full creative control, unencumbered by the intentions of the studio or the powers that be. But that also means he had to be very purposeful about using Glass' budget, which was a modest $20 million. Action sequences were few and far between, with much of the film's runtime set within Ellie Staple's mysterious facility. And while Hedwig made a ton of references to Drake's music throughout the film's first two acts, James McAvoy had the right idea with filming takes that didn't include him singing along to the rapper's catalogue. And just like that, an extra sum of money was made available.

While Hedwig didn't get to belt out any tunes during the course of Glass, he did have a major role in the overall narrative. The trio of personalities Hedwig, Patricia, and Dennis still had the most power within The Horde-- convincing Kevin's other personalities to join the cause and support the murderous super- powered Beast.

Hedwig in particular was given more agency, as he was able to steal "The Light" from the rest of Kevin's personalities throughout the course of the movie. Whenever Ellie Staple or the other characters attempted to reason with The Horde, Hedwig would take over and return to Kevin's consciousness. Furthermore, it's Hedwig's fault that David ended up coming to battle The Horde during the film's first act.

When Glass opens, it's revealed that The Horde has been mutilating more groups of young girls in the three weeks since Split ended. Hedwig bumped into David aka The Overseer on one of his "walks", allowing the hero to see where The Horde had kidnapped a group of cheerleaders. It's likely this scene that included James McAvoy's planned Drake song, as the 6-year old personality was shown wearing headphones, mumbling along, and dancing during their brief interaction.

Since Glass arrived in theaters, it's already had a fascinating tenure with moviegoers. When reviews hit the internet, moviegoers were disheartened when the film was almost universally panned. Luckily, audience didn't have quite as many problems with M. Night Shyamalan's ambitious crossover movie, with Glass currently at a strong 77% on Rotten Tomatoes' Audience Score.

Audience's reaction to Glass can be seen in the film's box office performance. The blockbuster just won its third weekend in a row, and has already made an impressive worldwide haul of $162 million. There's more money to come, so it appears that poor reviews alone are not strong enough to sink Shyamalan.

The success of Glass is multi-tiered, as there are a handful of reasons why audiences have responded to well to M. Night Shyamalan's latest journey of superheroes and mind-blowing twists. Obviously part of it comes with the combined success of Unbreakable and Split before it. Split was contained thriller when it arrived in 2016, but the final scene revealed it was set within the same world as Unbreakable-- Shyamalan's 2000 cult classic. The idea of combining these characters got audiences hyped, especially given the A-Listers that make up the cast.

Additionally, Glass and Unbreakable almost serve as anti-comic book movies. They focus on the humanity in the characters, and only use action and superpowers once in a while. Considering how bloated the superhero genre has become, M. Night Shyamalan's unique trilogy helps to serve as a palette cleanser. And while not everyone liked Glass as much as the previous two movies, that hasn't stopped folks from shelling out at movie theaters to judge for themselves.

It should be interesting to see what comes next for M. Night Shyamalan. With the Unbreakable trilogy finally in theaters, his decades of work and development have come to fruition. And since Glass is making so much money, there should presumably be plenty of money for the director to bankroll his next project. But what could it be?
