Shazam's Director Explains How The Comics Influenced The Hero's Costume

With some exceptions, usually you can count on a superhero's costume in movies to at least resemble the duds they wear in the comics, and then there instances where the outfits look like they've been ripped directly from the printed page, like with Deadpool and Iron Man. In the case of Shazam!, from what we've seen in photos so far, the World's Mightiest Mortal's costume looks like a blend of his classic look and his New 52 look. Regarding the former, director David F. Sandberg felt it was necessary to honor the character's Golden Age roots, hence why Shazam's movie costume retains the short cape. Sandberg explained:

I wanted to keep the shorter cape as a throwback to the original because that's something that sets him apart from Superman or Batman. It makes him feel a bit more Golden Age superhero, which is the vibe I'm going for.

Along with providing the first official Shazam! photo, which shows Zachary Levi's Shazam and Jack Dylan Grazer's Freddy enjoying some soda outside a convenience store, EW spoke with David F. Sandberg about the Shazam costume, namely with how he wanted the cape to harken back to arguably the characters' heyday in the 1940s. The superhero previously known as Captain Marvel has been a major player in the DC Comics universe since the 1970s, but back when he was still being published by Fawcett Comics, he was one of the most popular superheroes ever, even outselling Superman at one point. Those days are long past, but they're still historically important, which is why Sandberg made sure that the Shazam costume in his movie partly reflected the Golden Age era. That being said, Shazam's costume also blended elements from other periods in the character's existence, such as the hood from his New 52 reintroduction and the gold gauntlets from one of his animated movie appearances.

Just like the empowered Billy Batson's costume, Shazam! itself has numerous sources of inspiration. As David F. Sandberg noted, the movie is striking a Golden Age-kind of tone, but the plot itself is taking its cues from Shazam's New 52 origin story, such as being set during Christmastime and Billy Batson living with a foster family. But the basic premise will be the same that it's always been: the adolescent Billy Batson is selected by the mysterious Wizard (who also goes by Shazam) to inherit his amazing abilities. Upon saying the word "Shazam!", Billy is transformed into a superpowered adult, and in the movie, he's soon forced to use these powers for the greater good by battling the sinister Doctor Thaddeus Sivana.

Star Wars: Galaxys Edge Features A Ship From Colin Trevorrows Episode IX

Youll recall that before J.J. Abrams returned to the Star Wars franchise to direct The Rise of Skywalker, what was then simply known as Episode IX was going to be helmed by Jurassic Worlds Colin Trevorrow. Due to creative differences with Lucasfilm, Trevorrow departed the final installment of the Skywalker Saga in September 2017, but one element from his version of the Star Wars movie can now be seen at the new Disneyland attraction Star Wars: Galaxys Edge: a ship called the TIE Echelon.

Star Wars: Galaxys Edge is now open to the public at Disneyland (if you have a reservation), but needless to say that it takes a long time for that large of an attraction to be constructed. By the time Colin Trevorrow departed Star Wars: Episode IX, Galaxys Edge was nearly a year and a half into the construction process, and even though well never see Trevorrows Episode IX, the TIE Echelon was kept as one of several life-sized ships on display.

As for what specific use the TIE Echelon had during combat, heres what Colin Trevorrow revealed:

It was part of an upgraded First Order fleet. An armed troop transportthe equivalent of a Blackhawk stealth helicopter. We wanted it to evoke memories of earlier ships while still being its own thing. If you look at the elements, its kind of a hybrid of designs from VII and VIII, with some familiar elements from OT Tie Fighters like Vaders Advanced x1. Theres a lot of history in it.

If theres one thing you can count on from The Empire and The First Order, its a lot of variations on the TIE Fighter. Assuming Colin Trevorrows Episode IX also took place a year after The Last Jedi like The Rise of Skywalker does, that would presumably give The First Order enough time to get numerous TIE Echelons into the fight against the Resistance, which has now resorted to guerrilla tactics against the Kylo Ren-led tyrannic force.

Alas, it doesnt sound like the TIE Echelon will appear in J.J. Abrams Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, but because the ship is on display in Galaxys Edge, perhaps thats enough incentive to feature it in a Star Wars TV series, video game or novel down the line. At least The Rise of Skywalker wont be lacking in special TIE starfighters, as the teaser trailer shows Rey leaping over one, which is almost certainly being piloted by Kylo Ren.

Colin Trevorrow also said the following during his interview with Collider about his involvement with Star Wars: Galaxys Edge and the behind-the-scenes story on creating the TIE Echelon:

It was just a natural part of the process. The Imagineering team asked us to develop a new ship for the park while we were designing the film. I took it pretty seriouslyits not every day you get to be a part of something like that. They let me see what they were working on, so I got to see what Galaxys Edge was going to be. I think what theyve created is incredible. Its such an immersive experience.

The director didnt elaborate on provide any details on the sequence where the TIE Echelon would have shown up in Episode IX, but he still loves that ship. As for the Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker that is being released for the masses, specific plot details are still being kept under wraps, but itll result in the ancient conflict between the Jedi and Sith reaching its climax.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker opens in theaters on December 20, and those without a reservation can check out Star Wars: Galaxys Edge starting June 24.

When The Black Widow Movie Should Start Filming, According To David Harbour

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is in a truly fascinating place right now. Avengers: Endgame is just weeks away, and the future of the MCU is largely a mystery. Marvel Studios is keeping its plans close to chest for Phase Four, as releasing the next slate of films has the potential to spoil the events of Endgame. But there are a few developing projects to keep an eye out for, including the long-awaited Black Widow movie.

The Black Widow movie has been slowly coming together, as director Cate Shortland has been assembling her cast and crew. Joining Scarlett Johansson for her first Marvel solo flick is Stranger Things fan favorite David Harbour, who already dipped his toes into the superhero genre with Hellboy. Harbour recently revealed when Widow's movie might begin filming, saying:

I think its slated to start in June. I dont think they have it fully-boarded yet, but its a great character. Im really excited about it. The cast is fleshing out (with) Scarlett and Florence Pugh, I think they said. I know they were talking about Rachel Weisz. Theres some really great actresses.

Well, this is exciting. The casting process may still be under way, but it looks like Black Widow's movie may start production in the near future. June isn't all that far away, so it looks like the solo flick will end up being one of the first releases of Phase Four. As long as nothing goes awry, that is.

David Harbour's comments to Den Of Geek are sure to excite the rabid Marvel fanbase, who are eager to see Scarlet Johansson's signature Marvel character get her time in the sun. While little to no information has been shared regarding the movie's contents, development amping up and possible June filming makes it all seem much more real. And the movie is a long time coming.

Despite being an OG member of The Avengers and one of the biggest characters in the MCU, Black Widow has surprisingly not been given her own solo movie yet. Instead, Natasha Romanoff served as a supporting character in a variety of other projects, including Iron Man 2 and Captain America: The Winter Soldier. But considering how mysterious and complicated the character is, she's still been underused in this capacity.

But that should change with her solo movie, although it's unclear what that project will contain. Black Widow is one of the surviving characters in Avengers: Endgame, but it seems possible that she might perish in the battle against Thanos. If that's the case, perhaps the solo movie will be a prequel, allowing for Widow's dark backstory to finally be fleshed out onscreen.

Black Widow will return to theaters when Avengers: Endgame arrives in theaters on April 26th, and you can see David Harbour in Hellboy April 12th. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
