Avatar 4 And 5 Don't Actually Have A Green Light From Disney Yet

Ever since Avatar became the highest grossing movie in the history of ever, fans have been waiting for sequels. That wait has lasted almost an entire decade now and is still far from being over. For years there was a question as to whether any sequels would even happen, and now, while principal photography on two sequels has been completed, it has also been confirmed that, while we knew James Cameron has written screenplays for two additional films, there's no guarantee those will ever see the light of day.

The major reason that Avatar sequels have apparently taken a decade is that the screenwriting process continued to get more and more involved for James Cameron. What was originally going to be two more movies, completing a trilogy, became three more movies and is now four more films, making a total of five if they all get made. However, Disney CEO Bob Iger recently confirmed to Barron's that while the first two sequels are on the way, the other two films have not been greenlit.

While James Cameron's original deal was made with 20th Century Fox, with the acquisition of Fox by Disney, a deal that is expected to be closed by the end of the month, it's going to be Disney's decision whether or not the other two sequels happen, and right now it seems that decision has not been made.

The original schedule, as it had been presented, was that Avatar 4 and 5 would go into production shortly after the release of Avatar 3. It appears now that part of the reason for that plan may have been that Fox wanted to see how Avatar 2 and 3 did before letting the next two films get made. While the original Avatar is the highest grossing movie ever (unadjusted for inflation) there's always the possibility that the audience will have moved on and the sequels could falter.

It's still possible that Disney could make the call to give the final two Avatar movies the green light sooner. Avatar 2 is set to open in 2020 and Avatar 3 will hit in 2021. Avatar 4 isn't expected until 2024, but if Disney doesn't want to wait that long it could make the call, assuming it works within everybody's schedule, to move on the other two movies earlier.

Certainly, with the Fox merger happening Disney is going to need to figure out how it plans to make and release movies in the coming years and it's going to have a significant impact on the release schedule overall. Disney won't want its films to compete with themselves too much and with the addition of every Fox property, there are just going to be that many more films, and potential films, to consider when planning releases for the next several years.

While the merger is expected to be finalized soon, it will probably still be several months before we really get an idea of what the new Walt Disney Company will look like. The company has to figure out exactly what it is they have and integrate all of the new elements into the existing company. Disney probably won't be making any multi-million dollar decisions, like greenlighting a couple of expensive films from the new studio, until it's sure it's ready to do so.

The original Avatar, while it certainly left itself open to potential sequels, also wasn't exactly a cliffhanger ending that required them. Based on what James Cameron has said previously, the same will be the case with each individual sequel.

At the center of each of our four movies will be the Sully family. Each sequel will play as a stand-alone movie. Each movie's story will come to its own conclusion... However, when looked at as a whole, the journey across all four movies will create an even larger connected epic saga for audiences around the world.

On the plus side, this means that if something does go south for the Avatar franchise and we don't see the fourth and fifth films at all, it shouldn't be an issue for those people who are stil big fans. We won't see unanswered questions left in Avatar 3 that won't ever be resolved.

It's also in Disney's best interests to make sure that the Avatar franchise does continue to be successful. Long before the House of Mouse decided to purchase 20th Century Fox, the company made a deal with James Cameron to license the Avatar franchise for theme park use. Pandora - The World of Avatar is still the single most popular part of Walt Disney World, thanks to the Flight of Passage attraction which has insane wait times every single day.

These different sides of Disney's business feed off each other. The theme park's success has the potential to boost the box office by keeping people excited for Avatar for the next two years. At the same time, new movies can help draw people to experience the World of Avatar at the theme park.

But things also work the other way. If the movies aren't successful or fans decide they don't care, it doesn't just hurt the movie side of the business, it can hit the theme parks too.

While the final two Avatar films may not be officially greenlit, it's probably still a safe bet that they will happen. Even if the sequels don't compete with the original for the all-time box office crown, they can still be incredibly financially successful, which will simply add to Disney's massive library of successful franchises. And then, of course, there's the possibility that they will make all of the money in the world, and then those two movies will be greenlit faster than you can blink.

Avatar 2 is set for release December 18, 2020. Avatar 3 will follow on December 17, 2021. While not officially happening, the other two sequels do have release dates. Avatar 4 is scheduled to arrive December 20, 2024, with Avatar 5 completing things on December 19, 2025.

How Aquaman's Box Office Opening Compares To Other DCEU Films

Aquaman easily topped the box office in its opening weekend. It's a big win all around. No "buts" about it. That said ... the sixth film in the DC Extended Universe posted the lowest domestic opening of the group. It doesn't really matter, since it's already killing overseas, and it's still expected to end its domestic (U.S./Canada) run in the $300 million range. But facts are facts, so let's review them.

For comparison, here are the domestic opening weekends for the DCEU lineup so far (listed in order of release, not adjusted for inflation):

Man of Steel -- $116,619,362 -- June 14-16, 2013 Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice -- $166,007,347 -- March 25-27, 2016 Suicide Squad -- $133,682,248 -- August 5-7, 2016 Wonder Woman -- $103,251,471 -- June 2-4, 2017 Justice League -- $93,842,239 -- November 17-19, 2017 Aquaman -- $67,400,000 -- December 21-23, 2018

With $67.4 million, Aquaman had the three-day domestic opening weekend that was expected from it -- over initial projections but under the lofty dreams of $100 million. The current domestic tally is actually $72.1 million, but that includes the $4.7 million from pre-weekend Amazon Prime showings. Aquaman is expected to gross around $105 million over the course of its first five days, ending on the very busy Christmas Day.

Those stats above are just opening weekend statistics for the domestic North American box office. Aquaman is really cleaning up overseas, with a current foreign tally of $410,700,000. So far, about $200 million of that is from China alone.

Aquaman may have had the sixth-largest debut of the DCEU so far, but its opening still ranks in the top 10 December openings of all-time.

So far, here's the (unadjusted for inflation) worldwide ranking for the DCEU, via Box Office Mojo. This list combines both domestic and foreign box office figures to date:

1. Batman v Superman: $873.6 million2. Wonder Woman: $821.8 million3. Suicide Squad: $746.8 million4. Man of Steel: $668 million5. Justice League: $657.9 million6. Aquaman: $482.8 million

Aquaman is nowhere near done, of course, and if it does reach $300M domestic -- as Deadline speculates -- that would be on par with most its predecessors. That would also add at least another $200 million to the overall tally. At this point, the overall worldwide gross will probably land somewhere between $700M-$800M. Aquaman doesn't have to top the other DCEU films on any front, but a franchise always likes to see growth. Aquaman is definitely showing growth overseas, though, and that's a huge win.

It only took Aquaman two days to make more in China than Wonder Woman did in its entire run there. The Aquaman box office story is basically the opposite of Wonder Woman at this point.

Wonder Woman has the highest DCEU gross on the domestic front with $412.6M; however, it "only" made $409M at the foreign box office. Aquaman has already passed that foreign take with its own $410.7M so far. Compare that to the overall #1 at this point, BvS, which "only" made $330M domestic but picked up $543M at the foreign box office to get its massive worldwide total.

When it comes to audiences, Aquaman got an A- CinemaScore from moviegoers, which is just under Wonder Woman's A. Jason Momoa's first solo film also has the second-highest Rotten Tomatoes score, behind Gal Gadot's first solo movie. Aquaman reads like a win from both critics and audiences, and even if it doesn't post the biggest numbers, it's still a success. And it's also very likely leading to Aquaman 2, whether that is directed by James Wan or not.

DC/Warner Bros.'s next film on the schedule is Shazam! which opens April 5, 2019. That one seems like its own thing, but Zachary Levi discussed how it would connect to the larger DCEU. As cool as Shazam! looks, it has the misfortune of opening in arguably the single busiest blockbuster season in cinematic memory. Check out the insane schedule for 2019.





It's hard to speculate about what Eddie Marsan's role will be in Hobbs and Shaw given how little we know about the film. He is a talented actor who can play a good guy or a slimy villain, as we saw in Deadpool 2. We also don't really know what this movie will be yet.

Last year was perhaps the biggest year yet for superhero movies, with titles from Fox, Disney, Warner Bros. and Sony all dropping and making a huge splash at the box office. Perhaps the most surprising and impressive performance came from Sony. Thanks to the one-two punch of Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the studio had an especially great end of the year at the movies, with revenue up 76%.

For the third-quarter of the fiscal year, which ended on December 31, 2018, Sony Pictures Entertainment reported theatrical revenue of $532 million, according to Media Play News. Thats up 76% from the $302 million in revenue Sony pulled in theatrically during Q3 of 2017. The film unit also increased its operating income from $93 million in Q3 2017 to $102 million last year.

The overall revenue for the October-December quarter at Sonys film division, which includes motion pictures as well as TV productions, licensing and media networks, jumped over $2.45 billion, up from 2017s $2.3 billion.

In Q3 of 2017, Blade Runner 2049 and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle drove the revenue for Sony Pictures theatrically, with $163 million and $329 million, respectively. In 2018, Sony had the Web-Slingers to thank for the studios increased success.

Venom broke records on the way to an $855 million worldwide box office, helped along the way by a phenomenal performance in China that pushed Sonys international box office to over $2 billion for the year. Venom didnt do all the work though, because the acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse racked up $255 million.

Thanks to the Marvel characters, Sony Pictures had a great third-quarter that showed growth over the year before. Beyond that though, it also set Sony up for success moving forward and made it quite clear that the Spider-Man characters should be an integral part of the studios box office strategy. After the success of Venom, Sony inked a multi-picture deal with IMAX that will ensure the studios major 2019 releases play in the pricier large-screen format.

Venoms performance also validated Sonys desire to create a shared cinematic universe around the character. Morbius probably wont be the next Venom, and the only real guaranteed success is likely Venom 2, but Ruben Fleischers films incredible box office puts Sony in a much better place than it was after The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

While Venom was the all-star for Sony, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse did its part as well. The film is still continuing to bring in audiences and is now over $340 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo, with a March release in Japan, before Sonys fiscal year is over, still to come. It is also the deserving favorite to collect the Oscar for Best Animated Film at this months Oscars and now has a spinoff and sequel in the works.

All in all, Venom and Spider-Man helped Sony to a great end of the year at the movies, but their success could also portend more great years to come.
