Clint Eastwood's Next Movie Could Be About A 90-Year-Old Drug Smuggler

It has been a few years since Clint Eastwood last found himself in front of the camera, but it looks like he hasn't come close to retirement yet. In fact, as he gets older, he has found ways to evolve and take on new roles that reflect his seasoned persona. That's precisely what's on the agenda for Eastwood's next potential project, The Mule, as it sounds like he could sign on to portray a real-life, 90-year-old drug smuggler.

According to this report, it seems that Clint Eastwood is currently in talks to direct and produce The Mule, as well as take on the film's lead role. The Mule is based on the exploits of Leo Sharp, a World War II veteran who moonlighted as a drug runner for a Mexican cartel. Sharp was arrested for hauling $3 million worth of cocaine in his pickup truck, subsequently getting a relatively lenient (given how much cocaine he was transporting) three-year sentence by pleading dementia as a defense. If Eastwood opts to take the job, The Mule is expected to become the next film on his to-do list.

This project is not the first time that a version of Leo Sharp's tale has been presented as a possible silver screen story. In fact, Venom director Ruben Fleischer had at one point taken a pass at a screenplay based on Sharp's exploits. However, the project ultimately ended up on a shelf, and The Tracking Board reports that The Mule will use a new script penned by Gran Torino writer Nick Schenk and rewritten by Dave Holstein.

If Clint Eastwood does sign on to portray Leo Sharp in The Mule, it will mark his first credited acting role since his performance in 2012's Trouble with the Curve. He also appeared in American Sniper, but in an uncredited cameo during a church scene. He has remained far more active behind the camera in recent years, helming films like Jersey Boys and Sully, as well as Warner Bros. upcoming true story thriller, The 15:17 to Paris.

Duncan Jones new science fiction movie Mute has a lot of people talking, but one of the things they're talking about most is Paul Rudd's epic mustache. It's so epic it's changed the way people react to the actor. Apparently, while wearing the massive 'stache Rudd found himself in an elevator with an elderly couple who seemed genuinely frightened of him. Although, as it turns out, it wasn't just the mustache that was the problem. According to Rudd...

It's great. People don't like it. People really recoil when they see a pronounced mustache... I remember one time having a mustache and going into an elevator. I was sweaty and I was running for this elevator, and there was an elderly couple who were really not psyched to see me. They thought I looked threatening or something. They walked off the elevator and I realized, and I'm not kidding, I had a t-shirt that said 'Mustache rides, 25 cents.' I didn't even realize it until they walked off. That is a true story. And, they never offered me a quarter.

To be fair, it's possible that t-shirt would have terrified an elderly couple even if Paul Rudd hadn't actually had a mustache at the time. Of course, with that mustache, how could somebody not be mildly terrified. It takes up most of the actor's face. Also, how often do you have to wear a "mustache rides" t-shirt to make it such a normal thing that you forget you're wearing it?

Having said that, we just get used to seeing some people without facial hair, and sometimes when that changes it just feels wrong. It seems like people who don't even know Paul Rudd know there's something wrong when he has a mustache. And rest assured the mustache is entirely real. Paul Rudd confirms on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that his facial hair is entirely his own and not the creation of Mute's makeup department. He also reveals the rather surprising inspiration for the mustache, Robert Altman's M.A.S.H.

Yeah, that's real. And it actually goes and then splits out. You know Justin [Theroux] has a blonde wig. There's a similar thing with Elliot Gould and Donald Sutherland in M.A.S.H., so we kind of recreated their looks a little bit.

With that piece of information, it now makes sense why Paul Rudd's character has a mustache like that in the first place Beyond the fact that when your character's name is Cactus Bill, it would seem to be necessary that you have a massive mustache.

Mute debuts on Netflix later this month and looks to take a great deal of inspiration from Blade Runner, from the futuristic science fiction setting to the noir story, it looks to be a solid follow-up for fans who want more of that sort of story following Blade Runner 2049.

Few comic book characters have greater public awareness than Wolverine, and that's in no small part due to Hugh Jackman's performance as the character for nearly two decades of X-Men films. Yet when he first signed on to the role, Hugh Jackman himself didn't know who Wolverine was. More than that, he didn't know that the character's name was derived from a real animal, as he explained:

Embarrassingly, I didn't know what a wolverine was. I had never heard of such an animal and I presumed it was a made-up name for the comic book. I'd never read an X-Men comic, I'd never seen one in our zoos. We've got a lot of really crazy animals in our zoos in Australia. So I presumed it was a wolf and I did study wolves. I watched some documentaries, there was a big IMAX movie at the time, I went twice to go and see it.

Hugh Jackman hails from Australia, a land of fascinating species where everything that walks, swims, flies and crawls can kill you. However Australia is not home to the ferocious and fearless wolverine, which primarily resides in cold, northern regions. Therefore the actor didn't know that there was such an animal and he didn't bother to ask, instead playing the tricky game of assuming.

During his time as Wolverine, we have heard a lot about Hugh Jackman's intense workouts and restrictive diets, but for the first X-Men movie, he was just trying to take a method approach to his character. He assumed that a wolverine was a comic-fied version of a wolf, so that's where he focused his research, telling Stephen Colbert on The Late Show that he studied wolves and watched documentaries on them to prepare for the role.

Hugh Jackman took all that wolf research and used it to inform his performance, at least before someone gave him a quick zoology lesson, as he recalled:

So, I turned up on set for a fight rehearsal and I was just incorporating some of that, you know, wolves always have their nose to the ground. They're always looking through their eyes and always smelling you. And the director goes, 'What are you doing, man?' And I said, 'I was thinking, you know, I would do some work on the wolves.' And the director goes, 'Wolves?' Why wolves? You're playing a wolverine.' And I go, 'Well, that's not an animal.' And he goes, 'Yeah, it is. Go to the zoo.'

Maybe reading the comic books or watching the animated series would have been better research because that is embarrassing. This must have been so strange for everyone on set, watching Hugh Jackman basically imitating a wolf. Hopefully there is footage of that somewhere. Fortunately, director Bryan Singer saved him from further embarrassment, letting him know that all the time he spent watching wolf documentaries was for naught.

While a little embarrassing, I've got to think it wasn't all bad though. After all, how often do you learn about a new animal? And through his research, Hugh Jackman did get to learn a lot about wolves, and wolves are awesome.

It is so funny to hear how Hugh Jackman's time as Wolverine started with a scene that sounds like it belongs in a cringe comedy series. This story is especially ironic to hear in light of Hugh Jackman's history as the character. Fans doubted he was right for the role in the beginning, and if he continued the wolf impersonation he might have proved them right. But now it is incredibly difficult to imagine anyone else as Wolverine given how brilliantly he defined the character onscreen, not to mention how that first X-Men birthed the modern superhero movie age.
