The Coolest Part Of Making A Star Wars Movie, According To Phoebe Waller-Bridge

For a certain type of fan, there's nothing quite as cool as Star Wars. Phoebe Waller-Bridge is part of the generation that grew up with Star Wars and she's now part of the franchise, as the scene-stealing droid L3-37 from Solo: A Star Wars Story. She has been on board the Millennium Falcon and she has stood on alien planets, at least in the movies. However, of all the things the actress was able to do in Solo, she says the coolest part was pulling on the lever that sent the Falcon into hyperspace. According to Waller-Bridge...

Going into hyperspace was probably the coolest moment. You know you're an adult, you know it's not real, but you press this lever and then the stars came and we both just went AHHHHHH. For a second, a second, I really believed I was going into hyperspace.

In the special features attached to the Blu-ray release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, you see that the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon was actually surrounded by a large screen during production which projected everything that the cast was supposed to see out in space. This meant that when the Falcon made the jump to hyperspace, the stars actually transformed from dots to lines and Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover saw the same thing that fans see in the movies when Star Wars ships make the jump to lightspeed.

As a lifelong Star Wars fan, I can't blame Phoebe Waller-Bridge for getting ridiculously excited at the idea of sitting in the Millennium Falcon cockpit and making the jump to lightspeed. In that brief moment where Lando and L3-37 physically pulled the lever and saw the stars change around them, it probably really did feel like they had made that happen. It used to be that sort of thing was only added after the fact, so actors had to imagine what they were experiencing, but here they got to really see it. Movies are magic.

To be fair though, it really looks like Phoebe Waller-Bridge may have had more fun making Solo: A Star Wars Story in general than really anybody else. L3-37 pretty much stole every scene she was in with her presence and her fantastic dialogue. She got to play a character unlike any that Star Wars has seen before.

On the plus side, there may be a way that the rest of us will be able to experience the same thrill that Waller-Bridge did making Solo. In 2019 Star Wars Galaxy's Edge will make its debut at Disneyland and Walt Disney World and the new land will include an attraction that lets guests actually fly the Millennium Falcon. From all appearances, we'll all be able to make the jump to lightspeed ourselves one day soon.

The word was that the next Die Hard movie was going to be a very different sort of movie, and that seems to have been reinforced by the recent hiring of the screenwriters. The new movie is supposed to be an "origin story" sort of movie, that includes both the return of Bruce Willis and the casting of a new actor to play a younger John McClane. That by itself makes the new film a very different animal, but now the studio has hired Chad and Carey Hayes, the twin brother writing team behind The Conjuring movies, to pen the script.

It's an interesting decision considering that horror has been the stock in trade for the pair for the better part of the last decade. In addition to The Conjuring movies, the Hayes brothers wrote the House of Wax remake as well as films like The Reaping and The Crucifixion. The pair was previously attached to write a pair of non-horror movies with the two planned sequel's to Dwayne Johnson's Journey movie, but based on recent comments by Johnson himself, those projects are either dead, or, at the very least, looking for a new star.

One certainly wonders if the decision to bring in writers known for horror is part of the plan for the new Die Hard movie. While we would never expect a Die Hard prequel to be a straight horror movie, perhaps the plan is to set the story apart by making it a darker tale. The entire concept of a Die Hard prequel is a bit strange, to begin with, since the entire premise of the original film is that John McClane is in over his head and has never experienced anything like that before. If the prequel were a straight action movie with a similar theme, it would seem to conflict with the other installments, so maybe this movie is looking to set itself apart in more ways than one.

According to The Tracking Board, the pair is rewriting the script, which implies that there was one already, but that it wasn't quite what they were looking for. Bruce Willis made recent comments that he was going to be checking out the script, so perhaps he took issue with it. While the movie is being described as a prequel, it seems the plan is for the story to shift between two time periods, allowing Bruce Willis to appear as well as having a new actor play a younger John McClane. It's unclear if Chad and Carey Hayes are starting from scratch or making changes to the existing version of the story.

Either way, it seems clear that a new Die Hard movie is on the horizon, even if we're not quite sure what it's going to look like.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a well-oiled machine, and it's been on a serious roll with Phase Three. Every single blockbuster in the current slate of movies has been a critical and box office hit. This includes Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck's Captain Marvel, which was the final movie to arrive in theaters before Avengers: Endgame broke records and delivered countless plot twists.

Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck did have a lofty job ahead of them, adapting a lesser-known hero's origin story into live-action, while also breaking new ground for the MCU. And as it turns out, the movie really came together in the editing and reshoot process for the duo of directors. As Boden recently explained to CinemaBlend's Eric Eisenberg:

That aspect of it is always one of my favorite parts of filmmaking. I love being in the edit room. I love being surprised by how you can put together what you shot in different ways that have it really create different feelings and mean different things. And it was amazing to be working with these other two talented editors who have their own way of looking at things. So, of course, it developed over the course of editorial, and really I find it's not like you're re-writing it. It's more like you're figuring out how to tell the story that you thought you were telling, and didn't actually tell the way the way that you... if you just put it together in a very literal fashion, you realize that you didn't tell the story that you you thought you were telling, and now it's about retelling it so that you are telling the story that you initially came up with, if that makes sense. And part of that process is just putting it in front of an audience and seeing if they're feeling what you want them to feel at the moment that they should be feeling things.

Anna Boden makes a great point. Movies are primarily a visual medium, so it's easier to craft scenes and the overall narrative of them once there's footage to manipulate. And since blockbusters like Captain Marvel come with reshoots built into the schedule, there's the ability to include additional footage to move the storytelling forward.

In her conversation with Eric Eisenberg, Anna Boden also directly references test screenings as an integral part in the filmmaking process for Captain Marvel. Having actual eyes watching drafts of the movie allowed the narrative to be fine-tuned, and changes to be made that might help the movie become more user friendly. Its an effort that worked, as Carol Danvers' origin story made a ton of money at the box office.

In the same conversation with CinemaBlend, Ryan Fleck also the true help that Marvel's reshoots schedule was in the making of Captain Marvel. As he put it:

That is unique to Marvel. They plan out the reshoots after every movie they make. For us it was like Anna was talking about - it was just clarifying the story, making sure the audience is understanding. I mean look, we're dealing with something called the Supreme Intelligence, which is a very complicated entity, a very complicated character. So we just needed to make sure that what the character was saying and that her interactions with Carol Danvers were really just, instead of adding confusion of the story, we're helping clarify the story. So I think that we added a few lines here and there between Carol and the Supreme Intelligence that helped clarify that story.

Getting Annette Bening was a major get for Captain Marvel, and the American Beauty actress ultimately played two separate characters: The Supreme Intelligence and Mar-Vell / Dr. Wendy Lawson. In order to make sure the audience could follow these mysterious figures, additional scenes were shot that could give appropriate exposition.

Captain Marvel made a big splash in her solo movie, and popped up as a supporting character in Avengers: Endgame. While not involved in the Time Heist, her powers were a macguffin for multiple plot points, and she was shown crossing over with Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Kevin Feige has teased that she'll have a major role in Phase Four, although the studio is still keeping its cards close to the chest.

Captain Marvel will be available for home purchase on June 11th, and the title character can be seen in theaters for Avengers: Endgame. In the meantime, check out our 2019 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.

Zazie Beetz stole the show as Domino in Deadpool 2. The mutant who is simply lucky was a wonderful addition to the franchise. Recently, Beetz was asked what other Marvel character she'd like to play and she revealed that she actually auditioned to play the role of Storm in X-Men: Apocalypse. According to the actress...

When I was a kid, I remember, in terms of characters, people would always be like, 'You should be Storm.' I auditioned for young Storm, actually, and I didn't get it. Growing up I always had an association with her. I mean, obviously, because being a young black woman, that was the one I associated with. But I think that would have been a little fantasy of mine to do that and sort of a nostalgic thing for me to try. So yeah, I'd say Storm.

As Zazie Beetz says, the number of comic book heroes to relate to when you're a young black woman isn't exactly a long list. As such, her association with Storm probably isn't all that surprising. However, because she felt connected to the character growing up she took the opportunity to audition to actually play the character when the role of Storm came back into the current X-Men universe.

In the original trilogy, the role was played by Halle Berry. The audition that Zazie Beetz is referring to in her Q&A at Ace Comic-Con Chicago (via ComicBook.com) was eventually won by Alexandra Shipp for X-Men: Apocalypse. Shipp will reprise the role in next year's Dark Phoenix.

The good news for Zazie Beetz is that while she might have lost out on the role for the superhero she felt most associated to, there are actually still plenty of others out there. While Domino had not traditionally been portrayed as black, the fact is that the character's race wasn't intrinsic to her, and so anybody could be cast. Beetz was clearly the best woman for the role, and so she got it.

But who knows? It's possible that the role of Storm will be up for grabs yet again in the near future. After Dark Phoenix hits screens next year the future of the X-Men film universe becomes cloudy. There's a better than even chance that all the X-Men will be recast yet again before they become members of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since exactly what the plan is with Deadpool is also up in the air, it's possible Zazie Beets could have another chance to play Storm if she wants it.

While Zazie Beetz probably would have made a fine Storm, it really feels like she belongs as Domino. It's now basically impossible to see the actress playing the straight-laced and often overly serious Storm now that we've seen her as the much more fun Domino. Hopefully, we'll have plenty more chances to see her in many films yet to come.

Crimes Of Grindelwald's Dan Fogler Reveals Why It's Tough To Be The Only Muggle In A Magic Movie

J.K. Rowling's Wizarding World has been going strong since the 1990's, and is showing no signs of slowing down. Now the acclaimed writer is intimately involved with the Fantastic Beasts franchise, with the second of five movies hitting theaters this weekend. The Crimes of Grindelwald will bring back the characters introduced in the first movie, and pair them with franchise favorites like Albus Dumbledore and Nagini.

Among the returning characters is Dan Fogler's Jacob Kowalski, the token muggle (or Non-Maj) of the franchise. Jacob may be a scene stealer, but his lack of magical abilities keeps him on the sidelines of duels and action sequences. Fogler recently spoke to this dynamic, when he was asked about feeling left out of the magical fun.

Of course, man! It's unfair! It's like being in the western and they don't give you a pistol. Everyone's walking around with a wand. Jacob is so brave. He goes in there with no weapons at all basically. That's cool. I hope at some point they'll be able to be able to wield the magic.

Looks like Dan Fogler, and therefore Jacob Kowalski, has a serious case of FOMO. Because while he's one of the biggest characters in the franchise, Fogler isn't able to participate in some of the most magical moments Fantastic Beasts. Seriously, the guy wants his own wand.

Dan Fogler's comments to LRM are what most fans would think if they had the privilege to be on the set of movies like The Crimes of Grindelwald. Because while he's part of a world that includes movies, novels, and plays, Fogler doesn't get to live the full fantasy, casting spells in a Wizarding Duel. That is, unless he ends up becoming a squib like Filch sometime in the franchise's future. There are 3 more movies coming, so anything seems possible.

Harry Potter fans are very eager to see how Jacob Kowalski ends up factoring into the story of The Crimes of Grindelwald, especially considering how the first Fantastic Beasts movie ended. After being introduced to the Wizarding World, Jacob's memory is obliviated by the rain that helped cleanse New York. And following a brief kiss with Queenie, he lost all memory of the magical journey he'd gone on with the rest of the characters. That is, until now.

Jacob will presumably get his memories back sometime during the events of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. There are also some fan theories indicating he might never have lost his memory in the first place. Given J.K Rowling's penchant for plot twists and secrets, it seems like just about anything is on the table.
